Robot Heart at Dawn Tuesday into Wednesday
I walked for miles to get to the Robot Heart set at dawn. It was so incredibly beautiful that looking at these pictures even now makes me want to cry a little. Scumfrog on the turntables, beautiful, amazing people everywhere, and another breathtaking sunrise. Absolutely perfect.
I think most virgins get sucked into Burning Man when they first see the never-ending sea of blinky of the deep playa at night. And that is sufficiently awesome, in the traditional, awe-inspiring sense of the word. But for me it was the desert at dawn that made me think, wow, this place is incredible. The furry bicycles on the cracked playa in front of an orange sky—it’s all indescribably surreal.
And the dancers at the dawn set…well you’ve either gotten up very early or stayed up very late to party. The harsh climate has worn them around the edges; they’re not only dust but a little uncombed, gritty. Fierce. The people who walk to the very edge of Black Rock City to dance at five a.m. are as hardcore as any punk rocker.
I walked all the way back to camp (7:00 and Ephesus) from the trash fence, and got terrible blisters, the sun beating down on my fur coat like some crazy desert scene from Lawrence of Arabia.
Totally worth it.
First, the sunrise.
Get a little closer…
